You could choose to diaper your baby almost anywhere provided they are safe from falling. In fact changing them on the pad kept on the floor is the safest you can get, but your back and knees will face subsequent stress. It is because you would be changing almost 2000 diapers in your baby’s first year, so either a standard changing table or a dresser with a changing table tray should benefit you for the task. However, when you go to market, there are a few things to keep in mind before you finalize your purchase.

Size up storage

A changing table generally comprises of shelves for easy accessibility to diapers and clothing. Some of them have drawers throughout and others have shelves or a combination of drawers and shelves. When you are choosing one, make sure that there is at least one drawer under the table so that you can quickly retrieve the supplies you need. Though many parents prefer open shelving, a drawer lets you keep things like a treasure trove which eventually your little crawler would be curious to know about.

Look for barriers on four sides

According to American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), a changing table must have a restraining barrier made of rails or solid wood on all four sides.

Sturdier the better

See that you are buying a dresser that’s wide and not narrow so that it does not tips forward when you place your baby on it. Anchor your dresser to a wall or floor by using furniture straps.

Consider convertibility

If you want to get more mileage from your changing table, consider buying a convertible one. You can convert it into a bookshelf, desk, CD rack or TV table.  Though you’ll be paying more for this option, the convertibility makes sense so that you can have long term usage out of this.

Certification

Make your buy a safe table by purchasing your item from a company that carries a certification seal from JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association) indicating ASTM International standards.
