An excerpt from beginning of the INTRODUCTION: § 1. Short Account of the Book The Book of Jubilees was written in Hebrew by a Pharisee between the year of the accession of Hyrcanus to the high-priesthood in 135 and his breach with the Pharisees some years before his death in 105 B. C. It is the most advanced pre-Christian representative of the midrashic tendency, which had already been at work in the Old Testament Chronicles. As the Chronicler had rewritten the history of Israel and Judah from the basis of the Priests' Code, so our author reedited from the Pharisaic standpoint of his time the history of events from the creation to the publication, or, according to the author's view, the republication, of the law on Sinai. In the course of re-editing he incorporated a large body of traditional lore, which the midrashic process had put at his disposal, and also not a few fresh legal enactments, that the exigencies of the past had called forth. His work constitutes an enlarged Targum on Genesis and Exodus, in which difficulties in the biblical narrative are solved, gaps supplied, dogmatically offensive elements removed, and the genuine spirit of later Judaism infused into the primitive history of the world. His object was to defend Judaism against the attacks of the Hellenistic spirit that had been in the ascendant one generation earlier and was still powerful, and to prove that the law was of everlasting validity. From our author's contentions and his embittered attacks on the paganisers and apostates, we may infer that Hellenism had urged that the levitical ordinances of the law were only of transitory significance, that they had not been observed by the founders of the nation, and that the time had now come for them to be swept away, and for Israel to take its place in the brotherhood of the nations. Our author regarded all such views as fatal to the very existence of Jewish religion and nationality. But it is not as such that he assailed them, but on the ground of their falsehood. The law, he teaches, is of everlasting validity. Though revealed in time it was superior to time. Before it had been made known in sundry portions to the fathers it had been kept in heaven by the angels, and to its observance henceforward there was no limit in time or in eternity. Writing in the palmiest days of the Maccabean dominion, he looked for the immediate advent of the Messianic kingdom. This kingdom was to be ruled over by a Messiah sprung, not from Levi—that is, from the Maccabean family, as some of his contemporaries expected—but from Judah. This kingdom would be gradually realised on earth, and the transformation of physical nature would go hand in hand with the ethical transformation of man till there was a new heaven and a new earth. Thus, finally, all sin and pain would disappear and men would live to the age of 1000 years in happiness and peace, and after death enjoy a blessed immortality in the spirit world.
Jim Dent, the award-winning, New York Times bestselling author of The Junction Boys, returns with a powerful Texas story which transcends college football, displaying the courage and determination of one of the game’s most valiant players. Freddie Steinmark was a small but scrappy young man when he arrived at the University of Texas in 1967. A tenacious competitor, Freddie became UT’s star safety by the start of the 1969 season, but he’d also developed a crippling pain in his thigh. Freddie continued to play, helping the Longhorns to rip through opponents like pulpwood. His final game was for the 1969 national championship, when the Longhorns rallied to beat Arkansas in a legendary game that has become known as “the Game of the Century.” Tragically, bone cancer took Freddie off the field when nothing else could. But nothing could extinguish his irrepressible spirit or keep him away from the game. Today, a photo of Freddie hangs in the tunnel at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, where players touch it before games en route to the field. With this moving story, a Brian’s Song for college football, Jim Dent once again brings readers to cheers and tears with a truly American tale of bravery in the face of the worst odds. Praise for Courage Beyond the Game Named one of Kirkus Reviews' Best Nonfiction titles of 2011 "Jim Dent, dadgum him, keeps writing books I wish I'd written. Now here he comes with another terrific effort, Courage Beyond the Game, the story of the most courageous kid to ever pull on a football suit. If you pick it up, it's guaranteed to pick you up." —Dan Jenkins "Jim Dent is a world class story teller... [he] will bring tears to your eyes, and Steinmark’s example will make you want to be a better person." —Joe Drape, New York Times bestselling author of Our Boys “A superb work that paints the resilient athlete as a fierce competitor and an unforgettable sportsman.” –Kirkus, starred review

EBEN ALEXANDER Many are skeptical of so-called "near-death experiences". Given his neuroscience background, Dr. Eben Alexander III was one of those skeptics -- until he had an experience of his own. In Proof of Heaven, Alexander details his terrifying but fascinating ride through a life threatening illness and hospitalization. He drifts in and out of consciousness throughout the book, thus shifting the narrative from chapter-to-chapter. At times he describes the interactions he has with his doctors and family at his hospital bedside, while at other times he articulates the enlightening visions and encounters he experiences in another state of consciousness. By the time he has made it through this near-death experience, he has undergone a thorough transformation from nonbeliever to believer in an afterlife. Some will take issue with Alexander's claims, while others will be inspired by the important message he hopes to relay from the spiritual realm about the things that are truly important. This book is highly recommended for those who are interested in the nature of consciousness and neuroscience, near-death experiences, and the age-old questions of the existence of a higher power. Alex Sanders, one of the world’s most famous witches, and founder of Alexandrian Wicca is published in his own words for the first time. For nearly ten years Alex Sanders worked with scribe Derek Taylor creating hundreds of recordings and guides to witchcraft and mediumship. Sadly Alex died in 1988 but he left behind a huge body of unpublished works, and this is one such document. In Alex Sanders : Book of Law, you will uncover Alex’s life experiences as a witch in the 1960s, his thoughts on witchcraft and the Alexandrian Book of Law. This very personal testament is full of surprises and glimpses into Alex’s fascinating life, that twenty-four years after his death still captivates the world. The book also includes commentary from occult expert Daniel MacDonald, carefully he discusses the matters raised by Alex and compares the social and magick situations that existed and continue to do so today. Using his knowledge of the magickal societies he dissects the Book of Law and also poses questions for the future Alexandrian Wicca and Magick itself. *Also included is “The Ritual of the Cabbalistic Cross” by Alex Sanders. In his own words, Alex takes you through this ancient ritual; “This is the Ritual of the Cabbalistic Cross, an invocation, a practice. This is an exercise. It is Hermetic. You must visualise streams of energy and you must feel them passing through your body. If the exercise is performed seriously it will always produce a profound and very distinct effect.”

Where is he going after death? In the Bhagavad-gita, Lord Krsna, Arjuna's friend and spiritual master, brings His disciple from perplexity to spiritual enlightenment. In the course of doing so, Krsna concisely but definitively explains transcendental knowledge; karma-yoga, jnana-yoga, dhyana-yoga, and bhakti-yoga; knowledge of the Absolute; devotional service; the three modes of material nature; the divine and demoniac natures; and much more. Bhagavad-gita As It Is is the largest-selling, most widely used edition of the Gita in the world.

In each unremarkable moment, someone somewhere calls out with a whisper ashamed it may be noticed, and a scream desperate to be heard. This book captures the essence of such a moment. This is the moment when we find ourselves clinging to the edge of endurance. Often, when we look back, we can see it as a turning point. However, at the time, it can seem as though we have reached breaking point. These critical points in life often occur when we have strayed far from who we really are. Consequently, our deepest being calls out with a message in an attempt to lead us home to ourselves. Yet the language of this message is often bewildering, as we try to understand what is happening to us. This book reveals how these moments of confusion and crisis contain an opportunity to reclaim our true self and make a new beginning.
