It must be acknowledged that there is no dearth of ordinary monitorial books, although I know of none exclusively appropriated to the Chapter degrees. But an experience, by no means inconsiderable, has forced upon me the conviction that the plan upon which these works have been hitherto constructed, is not such as to meet the demands of the enlarged masonic intellect of the present day. All theM onitors now extant appear to have adopted that ofT homas Smith Webb as their prototype, and, like it, have been very generally confined to the arrangement of the prayers, charges, andS cripture lessons, which are used in die several degrees, without any, or, at most, a very slight attempt to explain, by commentaries, the symbolic meaning or the historical references of the different portions of the ritual. Hence, but very little knowledge, beyond the mere working part of our institution, is to be obtained from these books; and although they are well enough for that purpose, still, as it is not the only purpose which may and ought to be effected by aM onitor, I have sought to present the masonic reader with something more in the ensuing pages.(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)About the PublisherForgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings. An excerpt from beginning of the INTRODUCTION: § 1. Short Account of the Book The Book of Jubilees was written in Hebrew by a Pharisee between the year of the accession of Hyrcanus to the high-priesthood in 135 and his breach with the Pharisees some years before his death in 105 B. C. It is the most advanced pre-Christian representative of the midrashic tendency, which had already been at work in the Old Testament Chronicles. As the Chronicler had rewritten the history of Israel and Judah from the basis of the Priests' Code, so our author reedited from the Pharisaic standpoint of his time the history of events from the creation to the publication, or, according to the author's view, the republication, of the law on Sinai. In the course of re-editing he incorporated a large body of traditional lore, which the midrashic process had put at his disposal, and also not a few fresh legal enactments, that the exigencies of the past had called forth. His work constitutes an enlarged Targum on Genesis and Exodus, in which difficulties in the biblical narrative are solved, gaps supplied, dogmatically offensive elements removed, and the genuine spirit of later Judaism infused into the primitive history of the world. His object was to defend Judaism against the attacks of the Hellenistic spirit that had been in the ascendant one generation earlier and was still powerful, and to prove that the law was of everlasting validity. From our author's contentions and his embittered attacks on the paganisers and apostates, we may infer that Hellenism had urged that the levitical ordinances of the law were only of transitory significance, that they had not been observed by the founders of the nation, and that the time had now come for them to be swept away, and for Israel to take its place in the brotherhood of the nations. Our author regarded all such views as fatal to the very existence of Jewish religion and nationality. But it is not as such that he assailed them, but on the ground of their falsehood. The law, he teaches, is of everlasting validity. Though revealed in time it was superior to time. Before it had been made known in sundry portions to the fathers it had been kept in heaven by the angels, and to its observance henceforward there was no limit in time or in eternity. Writing in the palmiest days of the Maccabean dominion, he looked for the immediate advent of the Messianic kingdom. This kingdom was to be ruled over by a Messiah sprung, not from Levi—that is, from the Maccabean family, as some of his contemporaries expected—but from Judah. This kingdom would be gradually realised on earth, and the transformation of physical nature would go hand in hand with the ethical transformation of man till there was a new heaven and a new earth. Thus, finally, all sin and pain would disappear and men would live to the age of 1000 years in happiness and peace, and after death enjoy a blessed immortality in the spirit world.

Jim Dent, the award-winning, New York Times bestselling author of The Junction Boys, returns with a powerful Texas story which transcends college football, displaying the courage and determination of one of the game’s most valiant players. Freddie Steinmark was a small but scrappy young man when he arrived at the University of Texas in 1967. A tenacious competitor, Freddie became UT’s star safety by the start of the 1969 season, but he’d also developed a crippling pain in his thigh. Freddie continued to play, helping the Longhorns to rip through opponents like pulpwood. His final game was for the 1969 national championship, when the Longhorns rallied to beat Arkansas in a legendary game that has become known as “the Game of the Century.” Tragically, bone cancer took Freddie off the field when nothing else could. But nothing could extinguish his irrepressible spirit or keep him away from the game. Today, a photo of Freddie hangs in the tunnel at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, where players touch it before games en route to the field. With this moving story, a Brian’s Song for college football, Jim Dent once again brings readers to cheers and tears with a truly American tale of bravery in the face of the worst odds. Praise for Courage Beyond the Game Named one of Kirkus Reviews' Best Nonfiction titles of 2011 "Jim Dent, dadgum him, keeps writing books I wish I'd written. Each is based, not only on a positive and beneficial quotation, but also on a passage of God's Word. As such, these devotionals are not only timely, but timeless. Indeed, they each have an eternal spiritual truth embedded in them. With moral training lacking in so many areas of our culture today, the stories and illustrations presented here provide a means for a woman to reinforce within herself what she knows to be good, right and just. Many of the illustrations are ones that a mother might share with her children, regardless of their ages. Work, sex, ice cream, religion-they all promise fulfillment. But what they deliver is fleeting.Jesus knew about this quest. He came to show us that peace is possible in this life, not just the next one. Yet Christianity, the very religion that claims Jesus as its own, has often built the biggest barriers to him and the life he promised. Celebrated speaker and pastor Shane Hipps revives the faith with a fresh and persuasive understanding of the message of Jesus. The shocking truth is that Jesus proclaimed "eternal life" as a present reality that dwells within each of us. A transformative breakthrough, this book goes beyond "religion" or "spirituality" and cuts to the heart of our humanity and existence. It's about realizing that we already possess what we are searching for, and that the Heaven we long for isn't just a gift when we die, but a gift while we live.
