How to Buy Sparkling Wine/Champagne
A nice glass of champagne can make a Valentine's Day celebration even more special. But before you pick out a bottle there are a few things you must remember: all champagne is sparkling wine, but not all sparkling wine is champagne. To be considered real “champagne,” it must be made in the traditional method, labeled as either méthode traditionelle or methode champenoise on the bottle, and must be made in France’s Champagne region. Champagne from anywhere else or is made using other methods is called sparkling wine. Don’t automatically assume that champagne is better than sparkling wine; always follow your own preferences and tastes. When selecting a sparkling wine or champagne the two most important things to consider are vintage and price.
Vintage:
- There are three choices: non-vintage (a mix of grapes from different years), vintage (grapes harvested in a single year) and prestige (grapes harvested from a small geographic area).
- Vintage champagnes are the rarest and most expensive kind.
Price:
- Don’t automatically associate quality and taste with price. Yes, expensive champagne is good champagne but there are many great and less expensive sparkling wines to explore.
- Some very respectable sparkling wines can range from $10-$20.
