Sony DCR-DVD610 DVD Handycam Camcorder with 40x Optical ZoomVery good optics and ease of recording. I still have a lot to learn about how to use the camera, but so far I like it. I tried to use the LP feature because what I used it for did not require a high degree of definition. The owner's manual says it will record 120 minutes on a disc if there is not a lot of start and stop. In fact, it lasted only about 60 minutes with no start or stop after the first start and the last stop. I would also have liked the ability to plug in a remote microphone to avoid ambient noise and get the speaker's voice more clearly. Over all, however, very satisfied.

I purchased this camcorder a few days ago for my dad, I must say I am quite impressed with it. I compared the Canon DC310/320, Panasonic VDR50, and the Sony 610/710. I went to the store biased in favour of the Canon based on the specifications alone. But what a huge disappointment the canon cameras were. They look cheap, the plastic is cheap, the buttons are flimsy, the buttons next to the screen were tiny and the on screen info was not clear at all. Canon's design department needs to wake up, I have tried quite a few canon entry level/mid range products in the recent past and have come up very disappointing with design and build quality. To make things worse, there was noise all over the place, indoor light wasnt great, but the dark carpet had light green and red spots all over on the LCD. The zoom action was quick. The one aspect where Canon trumps is that it has optical image stabilization, not found on the sony. This is a huge help when you go closer to the telephoto end of things, its impossible to keep the sony still at telephoto. The Panasonic looked much sleeker than the Canon, had a nice feel to it, felt a tad heavier as well though, some might find it a bit heavy for its size. The screen looked sharp, the menu system was ok, everything seemed just about fine. But the colors seemed a tad unnatural, and slightly over saturated. I tried to go fiddle with the settings, but I could never get the colors to look natural. The Sony has a very appealing design, the materials look of high quality, the fit and finish is excellent. Power up is quick, the touch screen is very responsive and so much easier to use compared to the dot sized rocker switch on the Canon. The LCD was sharper, the colors were natural although a tad dull looking (never a bad thing, you can always add saturation later depending on your subject). The camera gains up and down really quickly based on the lighting conditions. Indoor focussing speed is not very good, but it gets there. Quick movements can lead the video to just get out of focus. Nightshot plus is useful only when there is very little light, otherwise it over exposes like crazy. Even if you have bulbs or stuff indoors, you can manage without nightshot plus. Outdoors video is fantastic, I couldnt see many compression artifacts, details were there, I could make out the leaves on the tree clearly, the colors werent bleeding (A major issue with a previous samsung dvd camcorder i tried). I tried the Memorex DVD-RW format disc and it worked fine. Format takes 6-8 seconds (which is quite fantastic IMO). Finalizing the disc took more than 6 minutes. Not sure if this was because of the media. I will try other discs and see if I see any improvement. One annoying thing with this camera is the pop up message that shows up with you insert a non-sony disc. This can be very misleading since its pretty much just blatant advertising on sony's part saying "Use Sony Media". But it goes away in a few seconds. Ppl might think its an error or that other brand discs are unusable. Another thing is the clever marketting of battery life on the box stating "9 hrs" in a big font and below that in ultra tiny fonts it says "Using F__100 battery, with LCD off). The battery that comes with the camera is the F__50 that manages about 90 minutes of recording time. These sort of marketting schemes are sometimes why I get irritated with Sony. But nevertheless, the product is good. If you are looking for a DVD camcorder in the 300$ range, this is the one to get. If you want a marginal improvement in video quality, the 710 offers a slightly boosted pixel count. I didnt get to see both on a television screen so I cant tell you how much of a difference there is, but on the LCD screen I couldnt tell the difference, which is why I settled for the 610.

When my oldest daughter had her first child (it was also my first grandchild) two years ago I bought her a digital camera and printer. I have been since rewarded by receiving many photos of my favorite (and only) grandchild. Now, for my granddaughter's second birthday, I bought her this video camera. After reading many of the reviews for this and other camcorders on Amazon I picked the Sony DCR-DVD610 because met all of the needs that I had for a camcorder that I would give as a gift: 1. POPULAR. Almost everyone who purchased this item was very happy with it. This was not so with all of the best-selling camcorders, even those at twice the price. 2. EASY. I wanted to get her one that was fairly easy to use. I read the instruction book on-line and felt that this fit the bill. 3. DVDs. It was important to me that it used some sort of DVD as the primary recording media since I feel that it is more archival than tape and more secure than a hard drive only. 4. PRICE. Even though would have been willing to spend more, I was hoping for something under $400. I also purchased an accessory kit (which included a bag, an extra battery and 2 DVDs) and then some extra Sony brand DVDs (after reading some of the reviews I decided to stick with the Sony brand in order to avoid the message that pops up when you use a different brand of DVDs). So far my daughter and her husband have been VERY happy with this gift and I am hoping see some great videos of my beautiful granddaughter who lives several states away. When I purchased this stereo as a gift for my wife, I was concerned by some reviewers distaste of its appearance. One even returned it because, though he said it sounded awesome, it looked too ugly to keep! Shockingly, my wife loves the look of this old-school-style beast! SO, now about the sound... It can get LOUD! The speakers are really great quality and can punch it out without sweating. Cannot find the distortion level because our ears bleed before we can get to it! Some of the other components may last or may not. Disk tray seems flimsy, as well as cassette door. This seems typical of any stereo put out these days. Will not know about reliability until a few more months/years down the road. I would assume that something will go wrong with this stereo eventually. They don't make em like they used to in the 70's folks. Overall, this stereo has some real kick to it. It might not look like the high-end stereos from the 70's, but it sure can sound like one! This stereo was the perfect choice for us.

I bought this item the day after I reveived my JVC HX-D77 540-Watt DVD Mini System. why? The JVC has a HUGE sound and is great, but a couple things rubbed me wrong. First, none of the good sound settings work with video input i.e. theater surround type settings. Second the "sound turbo" function is hardly noticable on the JVC! Third, the JVC was cosmetically cartoonish. Don't get me wrong...It's a killer system for my 17 year-old son! (that's where it ended up.) The SONY is a better all around system, sounds great at all volume levels, crystal clear highs and HUGE punching bass as well! Further, it looks like a stereo system as much as it functions like one. It has the old-school dual tape player/recorder, a much sturdier build than the JVC, especially the CD changer, and most importantly, an EQ that I can dial in to my own liking and create a preset sound for ME, as well as 10 preset EQ's. Again, this system lacks the settings I would like for movies,i.e. theater surrond, hall, live, etc. (the echo type sounds that I loved on my old Aiwa). There is a surround button that adds a little fullness to movies, but no adjusting it. At one point I had both the JVC and SONY in the same room and I go with the SONY! It's just better IMHO. (my son would argue that the JVC wins.)

Massive box (4.5' x 2' x 2' roughly), Very large main unit. The sound is incredible, tons of great features and sound control. Powerful, crisp, and flexible. 4 speakers can be used for surround sound, or stacked horizontally or vertically . Everything you could want in a "minisystem", with great, loud sound. Holds its composure well at high volumes. Just make sure you have a wagon/hatch/minivan type vehicle when buying/picking up!

This thing came in a huge box that has to be signed for so make sure someone home to sign for it. Also it came in a box that was as big as my fridge. Losts of foam protection. Sound quality is off the hook. great surround sound for my games, I have it hooked up to my Xbox360. I can hear everything. It is simple and easy to use, just remember to set the clock if you want the test pattern to stop, took me a week to figure that out. Very good investment in my opinion.

Pros: -530wrms -Dual Ported sub for extremely loud bass -Audio In (3.5mm) -Wireless remote -Exhaust fan in rear to prevent overheating Cons: -Ported satellite speakers (if they were sealed, would be better clarity and less bassy with movies.) -Sub woofer doesn't turn off when system is off (will drive electric bill up leaving it on 24/7.) -Volume knob isn't great, it's over sized and when turning slowly, it doesn't reflect revolutions like I would want it to. -3 Disc cd changer seems cheaply designed, but I never use it, so doesn't bother me. -Cords for sattelite speakers are very short, but merely adding some 16g speaker wire fixed that quickly. -Display on receiver is small and worthless.

My wife was given this Handycam as a service award at work. We have owned camcorders ranging from RCA full-size VHS cameras 20 years ago to Toshiba full size VCR on up to Sony 8mm & Super 8mm. Honestly, and I think you will see this confirmed by many sources on the internet... the picture quality of older camcorders seems much better than these newer smaller models. It seems despite the hi-tech digital wizardry, video enhancement and all the other tricks the manufacturers try to use to squeeze to get more performance out of their small "handycams" today.......... you simply CAN'T FAKE GOOD FULL SIZE OPTICS AND LENS. This DCR-DVD710 has worst color and picture quality than our Sony Super 8mm. In fact, the Super 8mm is not as good as our regular Sony 8mm which had a large front lens. More importantly, the power button on this camera broke the 3rd time we used it. Now the only way to turn it on/off is by removing the battery. On the other hand, our old cameras have traveled with us to Asia and Europe and still work great. I am glad we did not pay for this camera, but it did help teach us a lesson. If at all possible in your budget, don't spend less than $900 on a camera if you are the least bit concerned about picture quality and go with the largest full size lens you can get for your money. Trying to use fancy digital tricks to get a good picture thru a lens that is smaller than a dime is technically NOT GOING TO WORK WELL.

I purchased this item from another merchant(Dell for $339) about a week ago. In my opinion, its much better than the mini dv format. I love the ability to go from camcorder to dvd player without any problems. I have not tried recording on the memory stick yet, but dvd video is clear.

We are leaving for a trip to Australia and have been shopping for a camcorder for a year. We ordered this one because we have been so happy with other Sony products. The camcorder has a very short field of vision and noisy. Everything is fuzzy except the center of the picture.

I own an older Sony minidisc recorder (model MDS-JE520) and I was hoping these 80 minute discs worked OK with it. They do. Plus, each disc comes with an individual plastic case and label. That's good. I have not compared the performance of these Sony discs with ohter brands--like HHB-- but I can tell you that the Sony discs sound fine for my project archiving needs.

These discs are 80 minutes at a great price and allow for playing downloaded songs NOT paid for or authorized for burning, to be recorded via the disc-player/recorder [thru headphones out of computer to mic input of minidisc recorder] Sounds great, just pay close attention to volume settings on each playback. Of course this is all accomplished in real time, no accelerated option here.

I could not find this product in the stores anymore because of all the mp3 players out now; i would guess. I bought these from the recording store and they must not have had the regular discs and they sent me the gold ones. Better yet! I stocked up this time around!
