Eyelash Curler

Unless you already have naturally curly lashes, curling lashes is the essential step to mascara application – it opens up the eye to make it look wider.

• Start off with clean lashes – remember, mascara should only be applied after your lashes are curled.
• If you want, you can heat your eyelash curler with a blow dryer – set the blow dryer on its highest setting and blast it in front of the curler for 10 to 15 seconds. The heat will help set and retain the curl, but make sure that the curler isn’t too hot before you use it on your lashes. There are also battery powered heated eyelash curlers that heat up.
• To get the best curl, it’s important to start off at the base of your lashes, near the eyelid. Position your lashes between the open curler and try to place it as close to the base as possible (careful not to pinch your eyelid!), then clamp down gently. Hold it closed for at least five seconds and gently release; make sure that the curler is open completely before you move it away from your eye. You can leave your eye open or closed during this step, but leaving your open will allow you to get closer to the lashes’ roots.
• Re-heat the curler before you curl the other eye.
• Typically, lower lashes aren’t curled; a swipe or two of mascara is usually enough to help define them. However, there are lower lash curlers designed to curl the hard-to-reach bottom lashes.

Out of all the beauty tools out there, eyelash curlers are arguably the most intimidating-looking. To make things a bit simpler, here’s a quick look at the different types of curlers there are today.

• Metal curlers: Metal curlers the traditional model of eyelash curlers, with handles that resemble scissor handles and a curved curler with a pad that should be replaced every six months.
• Plastic curlers: Other than the difference in material, plastic eyelash curlers have another noticeable feature that separates them from their metal counterparts – most plastic eyelash curlers have a lever that needs to be pressed down to close the curler instead of handles to squeeze the curler closed.
• Heated eyelash curlers: Heat helps set the curl of eyelashes, and with plates that heat up when activated, battery-powered heated eyelash curlers skip the step of having to take out the blowdryer to heat up your curler manually. Some of these heated models have the same curved curler and push-down lever as plastic curlers, but others have a heated comb surface.
