The key to keep your fleece smooth and soft is to take good care of it. The pilling of fabric that tends to happen to fleece is the result of polyester fibers breaking. No one likes a lumpy sweater. Here are a few easy steps that will keep your fleece looking good for a long time.

The number one rule is to always follow manufacturer instructions on how to take care of your garment. Never wash your fleece in warm water. I also strongly recommend you do not wash it along with any other thick fabrics like towels or textiles that tend to produce lint. Patagonia fleece is a winter staple. The warmth of a Patagonia fleece sweater is perfect for the fall season, but how do you keep it looking new for years to come? Fleece is made of exceptional high-quality polyester so you’ll want to make sure you never iron, dry-clean or steam your fleece.

The best way to wash your Patagonia fleece or other fleece garment is in a machine with cold water using a mild detergent. Always dry it in shade and never under direct sunlight. I will also go as far as to suggest hand washing. Using bleach or fabric softeners will have a negative impact on your fleece and reduce the water-resistance of the fabric.

If you do not already own a fleece vest then you should look into investing in one, especially if you re into winter sports. Fleece vest are easy, light weight yet extremely warm. Most men’s jackets made for this season may produce more than enough warmth and leave you perspiring near the collar or back, but with a fleece vest it’s the best of both worlds.
