Leather and suede in the warmer months- have you gone crazy? Those were my first thoughts when I discovered this trend. Dearest fashionistas, that is the beauty of the fashion world, you never know what the eminent designers will think of next! Lightweight leather and suede have been quite prominent on the Spring 2011 runways with numerous designers including Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Akris, Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Hermes and Alexander Wang embracing the trend.

The most prominent feature is that these designs have been adapted for Spring. Perforated and textured leather allow the body to breathe and keep cool. Suede pieces, especially ones in bright springtime colors will be considered hip. Need a few ideas on incorporating the look into your wardrobe?

• If you prefer to stick to the tried and tested styles, you could opt for a soft lightweight blazer like the Guess leather jacket, with its single button closure and notch lapel, to give you an elegant cool look. Such jackets are perfect for layering up at the beginning and end of spring.

As a guy grows up and begins to care more about his appearance, it’s easy to fall into the trap of becoming a fancy pants. If we’re not careful, we can start to look more like a character from an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel than a character from an Earnest Hemingway novel. But we must remember: becoming well-groomed doesn’t necessarily mean that we need to look like a ninny.

After all, being a man means being ready at a moment’s notice, not carefully taking your luxury piece off before diving in and saving your friend in a rapid, mounting a horse, or delivering a baby calf (I just watched City Slickers).

It’s also easy to be led astray when it comes to selecting outerwear. Sure, you can get a dark, wool trench coat, but it will only be good for going to the office. They’re like high heels for guys. In another few years, we’re all going to look back on them like we look back on platform shoes now. So I guess you can keep yours around for your Halloween costume ten years from now when you go as a guy from the aughts.
