I purchased this unit a couple weeks ago and I am very impressed. It sounds fantastic and it's super simple to use. My girlfriend thought it was ugly, I think it looks great. As for lack of bass and treble controls- you don't need them. Why do people think they have to fiddle with everything? There is some mis-information out there on the drivers. They are all on the front- two metal dome tweeters, and two long-throw woofers. Each driver driven by a 30 watt amp. (30x4) There is a long bass-reflex port going to one of the grills on the back. The other is a dummy. It comes with an 18v AC to DC power supply. You can run it on 8 "D" cell batteries, which I haven't done yet, but that is only 12v so expect volume to be a bit less. Plugged in it is quite loud and at full volume distortion is almost inaudible. Bass is full, tight, and quite deep. It sounds better than any other portable I've heard. I've been listening to it mostly through a portable XM radio reviever. I bought a refurbished unit for quite a bit less than full price, but after owning it I wouldn't have complained had I paid in full. How could it be improved? A rechargable battery would be nice but would add cost. Some have complained about the location of the ipod (on top), that doesn't bother me at all. I put a 12v dc out jack on mine to power my xm reciever. Harmon ought to consider lowering the price a bit. Not that I don't think it's worth it, but they could sell more.

Many thanks to the other reviewers. Based on your comments, I took a chance with this sound system. The Harman Kardon ROCKS. It is also a hungry bugger when it comes to batteries, but I've found a good work around with a good rechargeable battery. If you like bass and want a boom box with boom, this is your unit - ENJOY!

This isn't going to be lengthy or technical...I think that's been done already. I rely on the reviews here at Amazon for just about every single thing I buy on-line. That being said, this is the one and only review I've ever been compelled to write myself. I was looking for iPod speakers for out by the pool (installing a new pool this season). I had two requirements - they needed to be adequately loud and they needed to sound GOOD. After many hours of research and indecision, I stumbled upon the HKs. The reviews alone were enough to convince me that I was making the right choice...now, after actually hearing the speakers - HOLY COW. If you can afford the extra $100, you can completely FORGET about the Bose SoundDock and go with the HK. I've never heard the two other close competitors (Altec Lansing iM7 and Apple Hi Fi), but enough other reviewers have compared all of them side by side...HK pretty much always comes out on top in the reviews. I love the design (a bit awkward with the iPod being horizontal, but who cares), I love the portability, the volume I'm afraid to even test at its max (it's that loud!)....and last, THE SOUND QUALITY. I've never heard anything like it. Clear, deep, rich, beautiful. Worth every penny...EVERY PENNY.

This case does not allow for carrying anything additional. The carved foam just about fills it, causing a real waste of space within the case. I bought it for air travel, hoping I could put everything for my ipod, including the ipod itself in it, but you can't add more than a maybe a CD in the single pocket opposite the cables. I'm not returning it since the cables are nice and compact and I needed the AC adapter. They will be convienent in whatever case I do end up using.

I am very happy with the product. It is a great deal for the price, anywhere else, the travel charger alone would have cost almost $20.00. I almost paid $59.99 at circuit city for the same thing, I'm glad I waited and got it for $29.99. The kit really does have everything you need for your IPod, the only other thing I had to buy was the FM transmitter. Just remember to buy one of those thin transmitters because the case doesn't have much space to store other accessories. I also have to comment on Cables to Go's customer service... they are great! My travel charger was defective so I called them to let them know and they had a brand new one out to me within a week, without any hassles. They were also very courteous and willing to help. I am really happy with this product.

Great price on a versatile kit
The car and AC adapters work perfectly with my 30GB iPod. USB and Firewire cables are a bit on the thin side, and it would be nice if they were longer (max length is just over 2 feet), but the retractable feature makes them easy to store in a small case. The headphones are low quality, but I didn't buy the kit for them anyway. (I'm very happy with Sennheiser earbuds that I purchased.) For the car power adapter alone, this kit is worth it.
Pros: All of the options I was looking for in one kit at a great price
Cons: Cable length is short
