What you decide to go with when it comes to picking a leather jacket is based largely upon your personality. If you are a bit conservative, then you might want to go with a long leather coat. If you like to be edgy and in trend, then a biker-bomber leather jacket is most likely right for you (think Michael Kors leather jacket). Whichever style you decide on, here are a couple of things to keep in mind when choosing a jacket.

Make sure it flatters your body

The jacket you pick should have a tailored, fitted look when you put it on. This will help the jacket sit closer to the body and help the jacket to keep you warm. Plus having a jacket that looks fitted will keep the jacket from adding excess bulk to your frame. But don’t forget that the jacket also has to be roomy enough in the chest, shoulder and arm areas.

Know your leathers

Not all leather jackets are made from the same type of leather, therefore not all jackets are the same when it comes to quality. Most consumer leather jackets are made from either lambskin or cowhide.

• Cowhide is the most commonly used leather to make jackets. Jackets made from cowhide are very durable, easy to care for and resistant to water and dirt. Plus they are affordable.

• Lambskin is a soft leather that is often used by designers (again, think Michael Kors) because of  its beautiful finish and light weight. With that said, lambskin leather jackets are not as durable as a cowhide leather jacket and can tear easily.

Invest wisely

Leather jackets are rarely cheap, so make sure that you choose a jacket that will fit into your wardrobe. Black leather jackets are by far the easiest jackets to fit into your wardrobe. If you decide to choose something different, take a look at your wardrobe and what colors you have and then find a leather jacket that compliments those colors already there.
