Whether you are traveling by airplane, train, or car, pets have special requirements when it comes to travel. There are many things to consider and plan for when traveling with your pet. However, there are many details that many pet owners either overlook or don’t know about. We want to help you make sure you can have a happy and safe travel with your favorite furry companion.
Traveling by airplane with your pet requires the most planning. The first thing you want to do is make sure that the airline you plan on using allows pets on their plane and what their pet travel policies are. Some airlines will allow you to bring your pet in the airplane cabin with you, while others may require that your pet fly in the cargo area of the plane. Either way, you will need an airline approved pet carrier. Also, before you take your pet on a plane, you should take them to the vet to have their health approved for airline travel. Some pets may also be nervous in a plane, so make sure to give them bedding, water, and food to keep them comfortable. If you are taking your pet on a long international flight, make sure to provide a travel pet food container with extra food so that either you or the handler can feed your pet at the appropriate feeding time.
Traveling by car is generally is a little easier, but you so still need to plan to keep your pet comfortable and safe. Many people may leave their dogs without car restraints, but they are important for pet safety. If you happen to be involved in a car accident, a car safety harness for dogs will keep your pup safe.
Lastly, while it may not be the most important thing, your pet should have fun and travel in style! One way you can have fun with pet travel is to buy animal print luggage to carry your pet’s belongings. Leopard print is sure to bring out your pet’s inner diva! Also, you can dress your pet up to set them apart from the rest. Try dressing your dog in a dog dress to give her some style. Dressing up your pet can also make things safer for your pet because they will be easy to tell from the rest of the pets.

Selecting A Pet Carrier
If you plan on doing any travel at all with a pet, a pet carrier is a must. Whether it’s the occasional trip to the vet, or a flight across the country, having a pet carrier makes it a lot more convenient to bring your pet along from the trip.
Pet carriers come in many different shapes and sizes, so it’s important to find one that’s the best for your pet. Here are some tips to consider when getting a pet carrier:
- Size. Make sure that your pet carrier is large enough for your pet to lie down and turn around in, otherwise your pet will be very uncomfortable, and potentially be in danger of suffering negative health consequences (on long trips).
- Padding. Your pet may get jostled during your trip, so it’s important that the inside of your pet carrier is lined with protective padding. Laying down bedding on the floor of the pet carrier will also make it more comfortable for your pet.
- Door Design. Getting your pet into a pet carrier can be tricky, and getting an angry cat out of one can be a nightmare. Make the job easier on yourself, and get a pet carrier that has as additional opening at the top that makes putting your cat into and out of the carrier a snap.
- Wheels. If you’re going to be doing a lot of traveling on foot or by bike, or have a medium to large size pet, you’ll want to look into getting a pet stroller or a pet carrier on wheels, that will spare your back and arms from the effort of having to lift your pet.
- TSA Regulations. If you plan on doing any air travel with your pet carrier, make sure to get an airline friendly pet carrier that meets the TSA regulations.
