1. Here’s a little bit of history. It has been nearly 75 years since the term ‘Plasma TV’ was coined. It was Hungarian physicist Kálmán Tihanyi who first conceived such an idea in 1936, making him the first inventor ever to think of such a thing as flat screen televisions. However, it took almost another 30 years for manufacturers to even consider developing flat screen televisions using the technology. It was is 1964 that the first monochrome plasma display was invented in University of Illinois by Gene Slottow, Donald Bitzer and graduate student Robert Willson.
2. Plasma TV displays consist of a mammoth sandwich of several cells containing a mixture of noble gasses held between two sheets of glass. When charged, the gasses are converted to plasma which then emit ultra-violet light. The emitted UV light in turn excites the phosphors on the screen, a mechanism which creates the picture.
3. Plasma TVs are known to render pictures with the blackest of black levels while their LCD counterparts struggle in this area. Pictures in the screens of a plasma TV will be extremely attractive behold, with seamless action scenes and brilliant colors.

5. Plasma TVs suffer from a short life-span – This is one of the most commonest of misconceptions about plasma TVs. True, LCD TVs will last as long as the backlight does, which is virtually forever. But plasma TVs are quoted to have lifespans of about 20,000-30,000 hours, after which the phosphors in the display tend to fade. In reality though, if you use the TV judiciously on a medium contrast setting, experts say that you can get over 68 years of life. Now isn’t that enough?
6. Plasma TVs are seemingly afraid of heights, for they are known to emit a buzzing sound at high altitudes due to the drop in air pressure.
7. Plasma TVs are victims of burn-in issues that arise if stationary images are displayed over long periods of time. However, the problem can be easily countered using certain corrective techniques.
8. When compared to LCD TVs, plasma TVs tend to give off more heat since their working depends on charged gas.
9. Plasma TVs consume double the power of that of LCD TVs.
10. Most plasma TVs of today are equipped with NTSC and ATSC tuners.
