I love summer dresses

When summer rolls around, I start hoarding dresses. They’re my get-out-of-jail-free-card when I feel like I have nothing to wear or when the task of coordinating tops and bottoms becomes too daunting. They’re also excellent for days when I want to feel pretty but unfussy. Every gal has those days. As of pretty recently, I’ve begun moving away from traditionally safe dresses (you know what I’m talking about…no risk dresses that you wear, because it looks nice on you, but doesn’t really say much about your personal style), in an attempt to rebel and try things that deep down I like, but have been slightly intimidated to wear, mostly out of some ridiculous fear of evoking snickers from the nerdy men of Silicon Valley (of all people!)

I love Anna Sui’s new collection:

I’m a diehard fan of her designs. Lots of scrumptious prints that manage to be pretty, bohemian, carefree, and incredibly chic, all without being overtly sexy or pretentious. Unfortunately, it’s expensive and not easy to find. There are a number of etailers that carry her runway ready-to-wear collection, but it’s generally only a couple pieces here and there, and sizes tend to be very limited and get sold out rather quickly. I usually head first to Neiman Marcus, Saks, Net-A-Porter, or SatineBoutique.

Her runway items are fairly difficult to find and pretty costly ($300 at least), but you can now buy her new co-branded line with Anthropologie. The price point is significantly lower.

This is my favorite one:

The photograph on the right is of a friend. The tan/cream color totally washed me out, but worked perfectly for her.

To sum it up, don’t worry so much about dresses having to be perfectly form fitting or what males would always consider “sexy”. The notion of “normal” is moot when it comes to fashion, especially dresses. Wear what you like and wear it happily! Que sera, sera.
