2011 to Amon Ra Shiraz is balancing fruit and tannin extraction, rather than maximizing it. fruit has such expression that we aim to preserve characteristics of vineyard rather than dominate them. 2011 Amon Ra reflects absolute essence of Amon Ra style - generosity of flavor with finesse of structure. vivid purple color displays intensity of youth. nose has an abundance of dark fruits, plum, black cherry and hints of cassis with notes of mixed spice and anise. Although young and tightly wound on release, vibrant blackberry and dried spice flavors integrate well with youthful yet supple tannins leading to a long and sleek finish. As with previous vintages of Amon Ra, astounding purity of expression and multilayered structure will allow this wine to mature with elegance for decades to come. Wine Spectator rating: 93.

This wine is from Chile, Valle Central region, Rapel sub-region. The Carmin de Peumo is the winery flagship and a candidate for Chile's finest wine. The 2005 Carmin de Peumo Carmenere (I reviewed the 2003 in Issue 171, there was no 2004 produced) is a blend of the best parcels in the Peumo Vineyard. It spent 20 months in French oak and was bottled without fining or filtration. Purple/black in color, this profound effort gives up an amazing aromatic array of wood smoke, scorched earth, leather, espresso, blueberry compote, and blackberry liqueur. This leads to an opulent, extraordinarily rich, nearly over the top, sumptuous wine with deeply hidden structure, exceptional balance, and which manages to remain light on its feet despite its immense power. It can be enjoyed now but will be so much better in 5-7 years. It is a tour de force!. Driven and pure, with remarkably supple tannins guiding the black currant, plum, graphite and melted dark licorice notes. Picks up additional loam and coffee notes on the finish, but stays fine-grained and stylish despite its weight. Also contains Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2009 through 2015. 1,000 cases made. -JM. Carmin de Peumo is a dark and deep red with violet nuances. Elegant and complex with a great deal of black fruit; plums and blackberries with hints of gooseberries and tobacco. Well-structured, filling, bitter chocolate, sweet tannins, vigorous and concentrated. Thick with an oily texture, its rich fruity base ends in a long finish.. Enjoy Carmin de Peumo Carmenere with game, lamb, and beef with spicy sauces and robust cheese. CARMENERE Wine CHILEAN STILL WINE

This wine is from Portugal, Duriense region, Douro - Porto sub-region. Quinta do Crasto has been making wine for almost 400 years. Today, the estate is owned by the Roquette family. In 1910, Quinta do Crasto was purchased by Constantino de Almeida, founder of the Constantino Port house. Following his death in 1923, his son, Fernando de Almeida, continued to run the Quinta. In 1981, Fernando de Almeida’s daughter, Leonor Roquette, and Jorge Roquette, her husband, assumed majority ownership and management of the estate. With the help of their sons, Miguel and Tomas, they began the process of replanting the vineyards and renovating the winery. The winemakers are Manuel Lobo and Tomas Roquette Quinta do Crasto is classified as an ’A’ grade vineyard property. Situated on the right bank of the Douro River, between Regua and Pinhao, the estate spans 371 acres, of which 173 acres are planted to vines. The vineyards, rising from the banks of the Douro River to an elevation of 2,000 feet, are planted on south facing terraces carved from schist based soils. The upper part of the property is planted to about 40 indigenous varieties including Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cao, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Francisca, Sousao, Rufete, Arinto, and Rabigato at various sites. Most of the older vines were planted in the early 1900’s and some of the vines as old as 110 years old. The newer plantings are 20 years old on average. In the lower part of Crasto are the Vinha Maria Teresa and Vinha da Ponte Vineyards, the source for their single vineyard flagship wines. The Quinta combines state-of-the-art vinification technology with traditional foot treading in granite tanks called lagares for the ports. Fruit for vintage ports is hand-picked. For the still wines, the fruit is hand-picked, destemmed, gently crushed and fermented in stainless steel vats.. (Tinta Roriz/Touriga Franca/Touriga Nacional).
