Flor De Crasto Douro Tinto 2011 750ml

This wine is from Portugal, Duriense region, Douro - Porto sub-region. Quinta do Crasto has been making wine for almost 400 years. Today, the estate is owned by the Roquette family. In 1910, Quinta do Crasto was purchased by Constantino de Almeida, founder of the Constantino Port house. Following his death in 1923, his son, Fernando de Almeida, continued to run the Quinta. In 1981, Fernando de Almeida’s daughter, Leonor Roquette, and Jorge Roquette, her husband, assumed majority ownership and management of the estate. With the help of their sons, Miguel and Tomas, they began the process of replanting the vineyards and renovating the winery. The winemakers are Manuel Lobo and Tomas Roquette Quinta do Crasto is classified as an ’A’ grade vineyard property. Situated on the right bank of the Douro River, between Regua and Pinhao, the estate spans 371 acres, of which 173 acres are planted to vines. The vineyards, rising from the banks of the Douro River to an elevation of 2,000 feet, are planted on south facing terraces carved from schist based soils. The upper part of the property is planted to about 40 indigenous varieties including Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cao, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Francisca, Sousao, Rufete, Arinto, and Rabigato at various sites. Most of the older vines were planted in the early 1900’s and some of the vines as old as 110 years old. The newer plantings are 20 years old on average. In the lower part of Crasto are the Vinha Maria Teresa and Vinha da Ponte Vineyards, the source for their single vineyard flagship wines. The Quinta combines state-of-the-art vinification technology with traditional foot treading in granite tanks called lagares for the ports. Fruit for vintage ports is hand-picked. For the still wines, the fruit is hand-picked, destemmed, gently crushed and fermented in stainless steel vats.. (Tinta Roriz/Touriga Franca/Touriga Nacional). The grapes were gently crushed, destemmed, and fermentated for 10 days.. Red fruit aromas of blackberry pie, cherry, toast, cocoa and cedar, with good structure and light tannins. Grange 2009 750ml

This wine is from Australia, South Australia region. From humble beginnings in the 1950s, Grange has maintained its place as Australia's most prestigious red wine over five decades. Today, it is a wine of international renown, with each vintage eagerly awaited by collectors both in Australia and overseas. Penfolds Grange is a wine of extraordinary dimension and power. Richly textured, intensely concentrated and packed with fruit sweetness, these wines, regardless of vintage, require medium to long-term cellaring. They develop into immensely complex, beguiling wines that seduce the senses. An Australian icon, Grange represents a tradition in winemaking that is totally uncompromising. Grange has bypassed the fads and trends of modern winemaking in the sense that it has maintained an integrity of style and remained true to its origins in the mind of Max Schubert. Penfolds Grange is the quality standard against which all other Australian red wines are judged. To share a mature Grange, 15 to 20 years old, in fine condition, is one of the great wine experiences. The 2009 Grange Shiraz is a comprised of 84% Barossa, 8% McLaren, and a little Clare Valley and a little Magill fruit with a small 2% of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. At this youthful stage, this deep garnet-purple colored wine puts forward a vivid expression of blackberry preserve aromas amid underlying cassis, black cherry, spice box, char-grilled meat and chocolate box notes. Surprisingly medium to full-bodied (it smells much fuller!) with taut flavors that are very closed in the mouth, it has firm, chewy tannins to structure through the long and earthy finish. 406 cases imported to the US. Drink it 2018 to 2035+. . Tenuta San Guido Bolgheri Sassicaia 2011 1.5 L

This wine is from Italy. Sassicaia means 'the place of many stones,' and refers to the region's gravel soil. The original vineyards have a southwest exposure with extensive sun and maritime breezes that create robust vegetation. Grapes are handpicked, destemmed and crushed before fermenting with natural yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged in French oak barriques, then refined in bottle before release. Sassicaia's success prompted the Italian government to grant the wine its own appellation, Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC, beginning with the 1994 vintage. The legacy of Sassicaia begins in 1944, when Mario Incisa acquired a number of Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc vine cuttings and planted them on a sloping hillside of the San Guido estate, called Castiglioncello after the 11th-century castle at the vineyards upper edge. This tiny, 3.75-acre vineyard stood alone until 1965, when a second Cabernet vineyard was planted with cuttings from the Castiglioncello parcel; the gravelly, 30-acre plot would give the wine its name: Sassicaia, the place of many stones. This and a slightly more elevated microclimate of 20 acres, called Aianova, were planted in phases between 1965 and 1985, bringing plantings to the present extent of 90 acres in vines averaging 20 to 25 years of age. Since the late 1960s, Sassicaia has represented a standard of production that is without compromise. The grapes are hand picked, destemmed, crushed and fermentation is set off by natural yeasts in stainless steel tanks. For the first week, pumping over of the must takes place three times daily; during the second week, this is reduced to once daily until the end of the 14-day fermentation period. The wine is pressed from the skins and undergoes full malolactic fermentation. Aging takes place in 225-litre Allier and Troncais oak barriques, approximately 30 percent of which are new, for 18 to 22 months depending on vintage. GRAPE VARIETY: 85-90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10-15% Cabernet Franc MAXIMUM YIELD: 30-32 hl/ha (134-144 cases/acre) Alcohol: 12.5%. Wine Spectator 95 points - Ripe black cherry and blackberry flavors pick up accents of rosemary, mineral and spice in this red. Concentrated and intense, fresh and focused, leaning toward black currant and cedar notes on the solid finish. Racy midpalate. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2017 through 2030. From Italy.B.S..August/2014Vinous 93 points - Full saturated ruby. Very pure, floral aromas of red cherry, blackberry, cassis, minerals and minty herbs. Juicy, sweetly spicy and multilayered, with strong but well-integrated acidity giving the wine lovely early balance and intensifying its dark fruit flavors. Broadens out impressively on the back half without losing its shape. This silky, very graceful Sassicaia might not be as long-lived as the most famous vintages of the past but is irresistible owing to its impeccable balance. 'Lovely' is the word that dominated my tasting note. .Ian DAgata, Decemb

Ridolfi Brunello Di Montalcino 2009 750ml

This wine is from Italy. A wine with light cocoa, blackberry, and cherry characteristics on the nose, and just a hint of coffee. Rich red cherry, ripe raspberry, and leather coat the palate with a whiff of cinnamon and oak. Full to medium in body, with fine-grained tannins and a lingering finish. Grapes are cultivated from the oldest estate-owned plots, with vines upwards of 45 years in age. The wine is aged for over 2 years in large Slavonian oak botte, followed by nearly 1 year in small French oak barrels, and 12 months in bottle before release. Complements dishes featuring wild boar, venison, or Tuscan sausage and bean stews. Drinkable now, but will age gracefully over the next 15 years.. Vinous 90 points - Good full, deep. Deep aromas of redcurrant, red cherry, camphor, dried flowers and black pepper. Broad and sweet but with lovely vinosity framing the flavors of redcurrant, sweet spices, camphor and tar. This sneakily concentrated Brunello is already quite suave, with zippy acidity nicely extending the flavors at the back. -- Ian D'Agata.Ian DAgata, July/2014Wine Advocate 89 points - The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino shares the easy approach (and attractive price point) of its little sister, the Rosso di Montalcino. With vineyards in Mercatali in the northeastern part of the appellation (16 hectares at 300 meters above sea level), Ridolfi capitalizes on the natural structure and boldness of the fruit to define the wines. Supple and broad with large tones of black fruit and leather, the wine makes up for what it lacks in overt complexity with a compelling sense of fruit intensity. It's an immediate Brunello that shows a good sense of integrity even when consumed young. Drink: 2015-2020..Monica Larner, February/2014OTH 91 points - A wine with light-cocoa, berry and cherry character, and just a hint of coffee. Full to medium body, fine tannins and a chewy finish. Nicely done from this small producer. Needs another year or two to soften. .October/2014. Live and brilliant garnet coloured wine. Intense and persistent aroma, rich with fruity hints, ripe black cherry and wild berries, that turns to spicy notes, liquorice. The taste is harmonious and elegant, yet it has strength and character, with thick, well-balanced tannins that are never too aggressive.. Structured dishes of red meats, feather and furred game, enjoyable as a wine for meditation. Wine ITALIAN RED

Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2010 750ml

This wine is from United States, California region, Napa County sub-region and Napa Valley appellation. The 2005 ZD Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon represents another example of our commitment to producing powerful cabernets that also exhibit an elegant balance and distinctive style. With ZDs organically farmed Rutherford Estate as the core, this wine is a blend from several small low yielding hillside vineyards in the Napa Valley. Each vineyard lot was fermented and aged separately for one year before blending. The final reserve blend was then returned to barrel for an additional two years of rest in American Oak barrels. Savoring the intense aromas of ripe blackberry, cassis and plum, and subtle notes of clove, anise and sweet vanilla is an absolute joy. Deep, ripe black fruit is enveloped in soft, velvety tannins that carry extraordinary fruit flavors through to a long, seductive finish. This wine is drinking great right now but will age beautifully for many years to come. Only 800 cases produced! Enjoy!-Chris Pisani, Winemaker CABERNET SAUVIGNON Wine CALIFORNIA STILL WINE

E. Guigal Cote-rotie La Turque 2010 750ml

This wine is from France, Rhone region. Wine Spectator 99 points - A stunner, with ganache, warm tobacco leaf, espresso and singed juniper notes leading the way for an immense core of macerated plum, fig and blackberry fruit flavors. The superlong finish cuts a broad swath, presenting smoldering charcoal and iron details. Best from 2017 through 2040. From France.-J.M..August/2014Wine Advocate 100 points - On this showing, the 2010 La Turque was incredible, in a lineup of incredible wines. Offering off-the-chart notes of cassis, blackberry, aged beef, chocolate, crushed rock and exotic flowers, it flows onto the palate with a massive, full-bodied feel that carries ultra-fine tannin, awesome depth and a blockbuster finish. Chateau De Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-pape Hommage A Jacques Perrin 2011 750ml

This wine is from France, Rhone region, Southern Rhone sub-region and Chateauneuf Du Pape appellation. The Chateau de Beaucastel Hommage a Jacques Perrin from those years was made mostly from very old Mourvedre vines yielding tiny quantities of intensely ripe, concentrated fruit. Those fortunate enough to have tasted it never forget it. Truly, a ‘grand vin'.Saturated black-ruby color. More, darker aromas of black cherry, cassis, spice, leather and game, has an almost medicinal aspect.Very sweet entry, then backward and closed, almost to rough on the palate today.Extremely concentrated at the finish.A wine to be kept for your retirement.. Only made in top vintages and a blend of roughly 60% (or more) Mourvedre and the rest a mix of other permitted varieties, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin is a cellar selection that always comes from the same plot of vines. A massive, powerful wine, with serious amounts of extract and concentration, it slowly gives up gamey, complex (and heavenly) notes of blueberry, blackberry, blood, licorice, garrigue and smoke. This flows to a full-bodied, layered and brilliantly textured effort that conceals its tannic spine with tons of fruit. It should start to hit its prime at about age 10 and have two to three decades of longevity. Drink 2017-2029+.Covering a full 175 acres in Chateauneuf du Pape, with significant holdings throughout the Southern Rhone (mostly vinified at and released under their Famille Perrin brand), Chateau De Beaucastel is a benchmark estate that excels at all price points. Looking at the wines reviewed here, 2011 is surprisingly strong (especially for the Chateauneufs) and with their perfumed aromatics and supple textures, they show a lot of similarities to the 2009s. The 2012s as a whole show more freshness and purity, with good concentration, and should require more bottle age to come around. Both vintages are worth seeking out. Looking at the 2011s across the board, all of which were in bottle, it appears to be a strong vintage here. While the vintage suffered due to uneven ripening in the Grenache, it was actually a solid vintage for Mourvedre and this shows, particularly in the Chateauneufs. There is a potential cuvee that might end up being labeled 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin. As you can see, my rating for this wine is probably one of the lower ratings for this estate, even though it is a brilliant wine given the vintage. The Hommage cuvee was first made in 1989. At the time of my visit, the Perrins were still uncertain as to whether its evolution would justify a separate bottling. The wine displays considerable tannin, and is full-bodied with Mourvedres meaty, blood-like component intermixed with blue fruits, tree bark and porcini mushrooms. While dense it is certainly not at the level of the greatest vintages of Hommage to date. It will be interesting to see where this wine ends up, either declassified into Beaucastels 2011, or bottled separately.(

Ciacci Piccolomini D'aragona Brunello Di Montalcino 2009 375ml

This wine is from Italy. Wine Advocate 89 points - Paolo Bianchini's 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is a plump and immediate wine with dark fruit tendencies, a bold appearance and sweet fragrances of blackberry and chewing tobacco. The body is medium in feel but should gain some volume as the wine continues its bottle evolution. The Tuscan sunshine cuts straight through this wine with soft tannins and a fruity, approachable style. Two and a half years of barrel aging follows fermentation in stainless steel. Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello Di Montalcino Sugarille 2008 750ml

This wine is from Italy. The parish church, or 'Pieve,' of Santa Restituta stands on the winery property and gives it its name; the Sugarille vineyard was first recorded in the Pieve's inventory in 1547. The unique position and soil structure of the Sugarille vineyard--calcareous clay with a gently sloping southern exposure--give this wine an expressive, powerful character. This is a very special terroir, producing outstanding, long-aging single-vineyard Brunello.. Wine Spectator 92 points - Violet, blackberry, black cherry, spice and earth aromas and flavors course through this rich red. Deftly oaked and decidedly modern, this remains harmonious and polished, with fine length. Best from 2016 through 2029. 1,667 cases made.-BS .May/2013eRobertParker.com 94 points - The 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille is also exceptional. Firm tannins support a core of dark, expressive fruit in a wine that impresses for its depth, richness and concentration. Black cherries, tar, licorice, smoke and incense emerge over time as the Sugarille shows its typical brooding personality. Layers of fruit continue to build to the huge, enveloping finish. The Sugarille is another wine clearly built for aging. As is typically the case, the Sugarille is more tannin and vibrant than the Rennina.
