My goal for this wine was to create a well-balanced Merlot with superbly rich fruit, soft tannins and dark color. It's ten miles nearer San Francisco Bay than Rutherford and has a cooler microclimate. site was strategically chosen for its soils and moderate climate, which are appropriate for growing Merlot. Our Merlot flourishes at this site thanks to cooler weather - a mild climate allows berries to hang on vine longer, letting them fully mature. Crop thinning is essential to balance vines with a low yield of rich, concentrated fruit that's dark in color and has chalky tannins and ripe flavors. inaugural release of Etude Carneros Pinot Noir hails from their vineyard tucked away in far northwest corner of Carneros appellation. Unlikecustomary Carneros acreage, which is largely uplifted bay bottoms with soils composed of clay,soils on Etude Estate site are variations of volcanic origin. They are well drained, rockyupland soils. Combining these soils with extreme western location closer to PacificOcean makes this site a decidedly distinct destination. Etude's goal is to produce a distinctly styled Pinot Noir of highest quality, a wine that can satisfy any Burgundian urge and yet beproud of its California roots. 2004 Estate bottling is bright and engaging with aromas of cola, cranberry and graham crackers supported by subtle notes of nutmeg.
