Sancerre Non Filtre 2011 750ml

This wine is from France, Loire region, Central Vineyards sub-region and Sancerre appellation. Benoit Brochard and his brothers are based in Chavignol, a village located a few miles west of Sancerre, France. The estate was founded by Benoit’s great-great grandfather in the 1900s - today, Daniel manages the family farm; his brother Jean-Francois handles viticulture; and Benoit is the winemaker. Since 1977, the brothers have slowly acquired superior parcels in Chavignol, they currently cultivate 148 acres spread throughout Sancerre, Pouilly Fume and the Loire Valley. Each acquisition was chosen for its ability to express the soils types of the region, and the family produces high quality Sancerre in various guises depending on the soils of origin. The claylimestone soils which cover most of the region are the source behind Les Collines Blanches and Aujourd’hui comme Autrefois cuvees while the silex soils produce the Silex cuvee which offers expressions of flint rather than the mineral-driven style one would expect. Most of the estate fruit is hand-picked and delivered immediately to the cellar, which was renovated in 1992. The fruit is destemmed, gently pressed and transferred to oak barrels (228 or 600 liters) or 228 liter acacia barrels. Vinification follows the HACCP program (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) which, amongst other things outlines each step in the winemaking process to enable the winery to trace its wines from vineyard to the point of sale. At Brochard, the whites are aged sur lie, blended and then bottled. Each bottle is engraved with a serial number for tracking purposes. Daniel’s daughters, Caroline and Anne-Sophie have joined the family enterprise. Caroline helps manage marketing and sales, whilst Anne-Sophie, a trained oenologist works closely with her Uncle Benoit.. (100% Sauvignon Blanc) The hand-picked fruit was harvested from vines that are an average age of 40 years old. These hillside parcels are planted on limestone and face south/southwest. The wine was traditionally fermented - that is to say, in vats with minimal remontage, and no fining or filtration and bottled directly from the fine lees.. The wine shows all the pretty green herbal and gooseberry fruit notes associated with Sauvignon from this region. The vines produce berries of concentration and depth and the oak lends elements of toast and creaminess. Lifted acidity keeps the long and complex finish elegant and focused. Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2011 750ml

This wine is from South Africa, Coastal Region region, Cape Point sub-region. Cape Point Vineyards is located in the southernmost tip of South Africa on a peninsula where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. Founded in 1996 by South African investment banker Sybrand van der Spuy, the first vintage of Cape Point was 2000; their winemaker Duncan Savage joined the company in 2002. The Cape Point wine district was established a mere two years after the winery; its boundaries extend along the western edge of False Bay and Cape Point Vineyards is the sole winery in the region. Growing conditions in the area are influenced by the presence of two oceans ‒ the Cape peninsula is only seven miles at its widest point ‒ and also by the mountain range nearby. Cape Points estate parcels are planted to take full advantage of these two terroirs: Noordhoek was planted on the cooler, south facing slopes of decomposed granite and sandstone and the Scarborough parcel on warmer, north facing slopes. Only hand-picked estate fruit from the propertys 82 acres are used for Cape Point wines. Inspired by the great Old World Sauvignon Blancs, such as those by the late Didier Dagueneau, Duncan seeks to create new benchmarks for South African Sauvignon Blanc. In the cellar are stainless steel tanks, neutral French 600L oak barrels and custom-made 300L and 600L amphora. He ages his wines sur lie in tank and barrel and since 2008, all Cape Point wines have included a proportion of base wine that has fermented and/or aged in amphora. Duncan is also one of the youngest members of the Cape Winemakers Guild. Over the last 30 years, the Guild has come to represent the pinnacle of South African winemakers; one must be nominated for consideration by ones peers and membership is by invitation only. By experimenting with fermentation and blending, Duncan produces complex and textured expressions of Sauvignon Blanc that highlight aromas of grapefruit, citrus and stone fruits, rather than the ubiquitous gooseberry and elderflower. The results have been recognized by some of the leading critics in the world, including Wine Spectator, Decanter and South Africas Eben Sadie, who has been quoted as saying that Cape Point is his countrys finest Sauvignon..
