X 1600 Spline 29in Wheels

If you've ever sat and pondered which wheel will tolerate your riding style, don't fret, DT Swiss has simplified the process. With its new Spline Technology wheel line, DT Swiss has created designs to meet every intended riding application. And for those with a penchant for all-mountain riding, the X 1600 Spline 29 Wheel is aiming at you. Starting at the rim, DT Swiss constructed the X 1600 from a lightweight aluminum alloy. By doing so, weight is well managed without subtracting from the X 1600's intended application, all-mountain riding. That's right, durability and a stiff ride quality were at the forefront of this wheel's design. So, while the wheel remains compliant on rough terrain, DT Swiss guarantees a reliable power transfer and exceptional tracking on the trail. And not surprisingly, DT Swiss managed to achieve this at a respectable 1770 grams. For a reference point, the carbon fiber Enve Twenty9 AM tips the scales around 1644 grams with King ISO hubs. Durability is covered through a few subtle, yet key design features that DT Swiss calls its Spline Technology. For one, you'll find that DT Swiss applied its patented Prolock to the nipple threads. Essentially, this application seals the nipple to the thread, resulting in less tension loss, and ultimately, less wheel truing on your part. Additionally, the clincher wheel is convertible to a tubeless tire system. And when converted, your ride quality will benefit from lower tire pressures, less rolling resistance, and a near elimination of pinch-flats. Now, lets move into the keystone of the X 1600, the all-new Spline hubs. Essentially, DT Swiss designed the Spline hubs to strike the ideal balance between strength and weight savings. To do so, DT Swiss opted to design the hub around the use of straight pull, Competition spokes. So, the hub shell sees a reduction in weight, while providing the perfect positioning for the spoke anchors. What are spoke anchors? Well, they're a section of the hub flange that...

Power Fluid Trainer

While Competitive Cyclist's HQ in Utah has been enjoying unseasonably temperate conditions this winter, other parts of North America have been hit with the kind of snow you measure in feet. Suffice it to say, this isn't conducive to riding outside, and if you haven't already made a fitness contingency plan, then the Elite Power Fluid Trainer is your chance to get started on your season's goals. With more than 800 watts of resistance -- 100% more than standard fluid trainers -- the Power Fluid is more than capable of simulating base miles or intervals. The wide steel frame is more than capable of absorbing as much power as you can dump into it while providing a stable base for miles of stationary spinning. The blocking mechanism fits quickly and securely for a trouble-free ride that you can disengage without resorting to power tools. Spring tensioning maintains the right level of resistance between the tire and the trainer. The Power Fluid's elastogel rollers reduce noise by 50%, which your family, roommates, and/or neighbors will appreciate. We appreciate that the rollers also reduce tire wear by a claimed 20%, because -- we admit it -- our bikes often go onto the trainer still wearing the tires we ended the season on. If you're like us, and you don't always switch to a trainer-specific tire, then you'll be glad of this feature, too. It accommodates wheels from 600c to 700c, so you're set no matter what hoop diameter you're spinning. The whole frame folds flat so you can slide it under the bed, dresser, or prop it up in the closet when it's not in use.

Premium 29in Tune Hub Clincher Wheelset One Color, 15QR, 12x142mm, XD

When you combine a barely-believable claimed weight of 1,255 grams with the aggressive rolling and confident contact patch of 29-inch tires, the effect is a ride that's as forgiving and lightweight as riding on clouds. At least, that was our experience on AX-Lightness's Premium 29in Tune Hub Clinchers. Of course, a low weight means beans if it comes with safety compromises, and the meticulous Bavarians at AX make no concessions to the gods of broken rims and battered bodies. Every step of these wheels' lives -- from conception to cutting carbon to the final stages of curing -- takes place under one roof in Creussen, Germany. After all the fancy software testing (and less-productive but equally whiteboard doodling) of the design process is over, the material process begins with a carbon weave. AX uses a weave because, unlike the ubiquitous unidirectional fibers, a woven fabric has multi-angle load bearing properties that recommend it for a wheel's rim, which experiences dynamic directions of pressure as it spins. This means efficient power transfer and torsional stiffness can be achieved with less material, which in turn results in less weight. The wheels' reliability is boosted by AX's Spoke Reinforcement Technology, which creates the spoke holes during the manufacturing process itself. There is no post-production drilling once the rims come out of the autoclave, so there's no additional structural weakness. As a result, the Premium 55Ts can bear five tons of nipple resistance, which AX-Lightness takes advantage of by tensioning the spokes to 1300 N. The hubs are provided by Tune, a boutique manufacturer in Germany's Black Forest. The flanges are reduced and wrapped in carbon, which makes for a lighter overall unit that doesn't sacrifice stiffness. Please note that AX-Lightness recommends a rider weight limit of 220 pounds/100 kilograms.

Premium 27.5in Tune Hub Clincher Wheelset One Color, 15QR, 12x142mm, XD

The weight competition between common mountain bike frames, drivetrain components, saddles, bars, and the like is pretty close -- a few grams here and there separate the Clydesdales from the pencil necks. With the AX-Lightness Premium 27. 5in Tune Hub Wheelset, though, you're talking a few hundred grams between them and their closest competitors. If your aim is to ride lightness, then these are your wheels. Importantly, the claimed weight of just 1,175 grams for the set doesn't come at the cost of safety. Every step of these wheels' lives -- from conception to cutting carbon to the final stages of curing -- takes place under one roof in Creussen, Germany. Crossroc 29 WTS Wheelset

The way we see it, the brute speed of 29ers only come with one real drawback: a little bit of extra weight. The 29er enthusiasts at Mavic see it that way, too, or at least we assume they do based on the super fast, super light Mavic Crossroc 29 WTS Wheelset. By stripping two millimeters of rim width off of the Crossroc WTS XL, the regular ol' Crossroc WTS manages to lose a cool 50 grams. That's weight that you won't have to worry about spinning up during accelerations or climbs. The Crossroc 29 WTSs' S6000 aluminum is the same used in the burlier XL model. It's slightly heavier than the Maxtal aluminum used in Mavic's top-end wheels, but it still makes for more than enough low-weight power transfer for those of us who are self-sponsored. The spokes are also a step down from the top-end models, using steel spokes with brass nipples instead of the Zicral aluminum found on Crossmax builds. These small differences result in the paltry weight addition of around 150 grams -- hardly something to lose sleep over -- especially considering the weight lost compared to the XLs. Mavic's Transfer System 2 (TS2) hubs are the main focus of the Crossroc WTS wheels. As opposed to the Crossmax's four pawl setup, the Crossroc's freehub uses two pawls that engage simultaneously. The hyperglide body that comes standard on the rear wheel is compatible with all Shimano mountain groups and SRAM's nine and ten-speed mountain groups. It can be converted for use with SRAM's 11-speed groups using an optional kit. The rims get Mavic's H2 treatment, which consists of hammer hardening the rim to reinforce the points where spoke tension is greatest. The Crossroc 29 WTSs rock Mavic's UST system, so you can run them with tubes or you can take advantage of the smoothness, low-weight, and fewer flats associated with a tubeless ride. The included Crossroc Roam tires have a middle-of-the-road 60a compound for all-around functionality that's further buttressed with an additional layer to ward off flat...

Crossroc XL 26 Wheelset

Mavic's Crossroc XL Wheelset is the ideal choice for the cyclist whose rides often turn into adventures across all types of terrain. It runs the middle road between considerations of weight, durability, and price for a wheel that Mavic appropriately markets as being enduro-proof. The Wheelset also includes the specially designed Crossroc Quest tires, which are built for the same type of all-terrain use. The Crossroc XLs' S6000 aluminum is slightly heavier than the Maxtal aluminum used in Mavic's higher-end wheels, but it still makes for more than enough power transfer for those of us who are self-sponsored. The spokes are also a step down from the top-end models, using steel spokes with brass nipples instead of the Zicral aluminum found on Crossmax builds. These small differences result in the paltry addition of a claimed 165 grams of weight. Mavic's Transfer System 2 (TS2) hubs are the foci of the Crossroc XLs. As opposed to the Crossmax's four pawl setup, the Crossroc's freehub uses two pawls that engage simultaneously. The hyperglide body that comes standard on the Crossroc XLs is compatible with all Shimano mountain groups and SRAM's nine and ten-speed mountain groups. It can be converted for use with SRAM's 11-speed groups using an optional kit.
