Phoenix DH Mountain Bike Frame Black, M

It's no secret that part of the early success of the dw-link rear suspension design was due to Sam Hill's domination of the most technical courses on the world cup circuit. His track record would've led to an assumption that his dw-link equipped bike was tailor made for ultra-gnarly DH courses. This was only half true. His dw-link bike also pedaled with efficiency that rivaled bikes with far less travel. The Pivot Phoenix DH Mountain Bike Frame is built with this tradition in mind, and it has 207mm (8. 15") of travel thanks to the dw-link rear suspension. Ride the lift or ride your bike -- your choice. Either way you get to the top, the Phoenix can handle anything the descent throws your way from savage braking bumps to giant drop-offs and sweeping, white knuckle berms.Downhill racing requires that certain capabilities of the bike be incredibly fine tuned. Take the properties of the rear shock for example. Too much damping and the wheel cannot follow the ground. The result would be loss of traction and control. At the highest level, a skid or missed line could be the difference between the top of the podium and 10th place. This is not a problem on the Phoenix thanks to the dw-link rear suspension. As you pedal and accelerate, there is significant weight shift towards the back of the bike. The anti-squat built into the geometry of the dw-link counteracts this to keep the bike stable. This way, your pedaling effort isn't wasted as up and down movement at the shock. The solution to controlling the rider's effect on the rear suspension was found with the placement of the pivots and the length of the links rather than simply adding more low-speed compression damping which would hamper the performance of the rear suspension. With dw-link you can have serious bump compliance right alongside pedaling efficiency.Pivot's frame designers worked with Dave Weagle, the mastermind behind dw-link, to optimize the link placement as well as the shock location. The FOX RC4 Kashim...

Zaskar 27.5 LE Expert Complete Mountain Bike - 2015 Gloss Blue, M

As the top-rung on the ladder in GT's alloy Zaskar 27. 5-inch hardtail family, the 2015 GT Zaskar 27. 5 LE Expert Complete Mountain Bike is as premium as they come -- running a 1x10 drivetrain and rolling on premium wheels with a full Race Face cockpit at your control, it's ready for any cross-country ride that you are. Of course, the skeleton of any hardtail mountain bike is its frame, and that frame informs every aspect of the bike's performance. GT has spent the better part of more than three decades studying this, and the Zaskar is a great demonstration of what its engineers have come to understand. The Zaskar 27. 5 frame uses a proprietary blend of aluminum alloys called Speed Metal Ultra, with each metal allocated specifically to various areas of the frame, including the top tube, seat tube, down tube, bottom bracket junction, and other areas wherein the demands on the material are unique to that particular section. The result is a fine-tuned frame that's light enough to slay some cross-country singletrack but tough enough to rip some serious all-mountain trails, as well. A big portion of the frame's capability is owed to GT's famed Triple Triangle design. The seatstays are elongated to join the mainframe not at the seat tube/top tube junction, but further forward on the top tube. The seat stays are welded to the frame not just here, but also where they cross the seat tube. This configuration achieves several things. First, it shrinks the rear triangle. The tighter angles make it stiffer, for greater acceleration and less torque-robbing torsional flex under load. Secondly, the fact that the seatstays stay straighter for longer before they join the frame means they are wider at the seat tube junction, again reinforcing lateral stiffness for greater stability and responsiveness. Of equal importance is the durability which the design affords -- there's a reason you see so many decades-old GT frames still roaming the trails out there, and this is a big part of ...

R.I.P. 9 RDO Carbon Mountain Bike Frame - 2015 Licorice, L

When Niner releases a new model, competitors and consumers alike take notice. This is because of Niner's persistent research and design that squeezes every ounce of performance from the popular 29er platform. With 125mm of travel, the carbon fiber R. I. P. 9 RDO Mountain Bike Frame continues Niner's tradition of shaking up the market by pushing its bikes to the next level. As big wheels are becoming more prevalent, they're proving themselves on more and more technical terrain, and the demand for longer-travel options is growing. Where Niner's WFO 9 is a 140mm travel bruiser, and the JET 9 is a 100mm travel featherweight, the R. I. P. 9 smartly strikes a perfect balance between the two. And now with Niner's RDO treatment, it's destined to become the top choice for weight-focused endurance racers and backcountry adventurers. Niner's Race Day Optimized (RDO) designs have been steadily proving their merit, and that's due to the level of refinement that goes into each product. Niner engineers use the latest computer modeling to explore every conceivable option before moving onto physical prototype testing. Then, using both in-house and independent testing facilities, Niner accumulates hours and hours of fatigue testing before placing the protos under its highly skilled, enthusiastic, and abusive riders. The results are clear -- a carbon monocoque structure has a massive and menacing bottom bracket area with a removable ISCG05 chain-guide mount, a direct-mount front derailleur interface, 142mm rear spacing, titanium frame guards, and carbon linkages to boot. To say the R. I. P. 9 RDO checks all of the boxes is an understatement. But, those attributes are worthless without a proven geometry, and luckily, Niner's already sorted its mid-travel geometry with the alloy R. I. P. 9. While the R. I. P. 9 RDO's angles are based on its alloy stable mate, it's no carbon copy. The RDO treatment included a redesigned rear triangle and suspension links, where the use of carbon a...

Jet 9 RDO 3-Star-X1 Complete Mountain Bike - 2015 Slate/Blaze, M

While often considered irreconcilable attributes, the 2015 Niner Jet 9 RDO X1 3-Star Complete Mountain Bike brings together speed and low weight with a fair price for what you get, putting podium-topping cross-country and trail performance within reach for that many more riders. The Jet 9 RDO frameset is Niner's premium dual-suspension XC platform, the RDO (for Race Day Optimized) designation signifying a few key differences over its non-RDO brother, the Jet 9 Carbon -- namely a 142x12mm rear axle for greater rear-end stiffness, a lighter, stronger carbon layup to the front triangle, and a full-carbon upper shock link. That link guides Niner's completely proprietary, completely revolutionary CVA suspension system through all 100mm of its travel. Designed specifically around 29-inch wheels -- as opposed to being merely a tweaking of an existing 26-inch-wheel suspension design -- CVA (Continuously Varying Arc) is both taut and supple. Its low compression ratio means there's less need for suspension preload, so the mechanism can float more freely and react more readily to the terrain without being loose or sloppy. CVA's lower linkage placement beneath the bottom bracket means that pedaling forces are isolated to prevent the chassis from bobbing and bouncing under input, resulting in a smooth but efficient bike that's responsive to both your power and the trail's trickery. The included Fox FLOAT CTD shock with Kashima coating only further serves up CVA's suspension goodness. The switchable on-the-fly Climb, Trail, and Descend modes toggle the shock's compression settings for either firm, medium, or wide-open suspension movement, respectively, so you can decide what mode would be best for a given situation. The Kashima coating treatment of the shock allows for superb smoothness along with minimal maintenance thanks to excellent sealing mechanisms and a more durable exterior. The Jet 9 RDO frameset promises to deliver more than just a superb suspension experience, howe...

Tallboy Mountain Bike Frame-2014

The Santa Cruz Tallboy Mountain Bike Frame remains one of the company's best-sellers, and it's one of the most popular 29-inch XC-oriented bikes on the trail. Its combination of balanced geometry, solid construction, and reasonable weight all add up to the goodness that makes this so, and after you take one spin, we think you'll agree. The Tallboy is made of aluminum, with Santa Cruz's signature simplicity of design taking shape in hydro-formed tubes, the configuration of which is the result of well over a decade of experience in alloy manipulation. A medium frame is about a pound and a half heavier than its carbon brother, but its price is much friendlier, and it's still amply strong. And the strength and stiffness are further enhanced with the mechanic-friendly, oversized 15mm collet-style hardware and a 12x142mm thru-axle out back. The result is a frame that's light enough for endurance racing, but strong enough for anything you can throw at it. The Tallboy's a well-balanced bike, with agile handling and geometry that's slightly aggressive, but not so much so as to compromise its comfort in non-aggressive situations. It's as capable on the climbs or descents as you want it to be. A size Small is available, too, with a very low standover height, making the Tallboy an exceptionally friendly 29er to shorter riders out there. Santa Cruz has long been established as a master in alloy formation, and the Tallboy showcases this, as well. Hydroformed and butted tubes create a laterally stiff and responsive chassis, with a tapered head tube for accurate steering and threaded bottom bracket to keep maintenance down. The bottom line is a fast, stable machine that's as happy to race as it is to quietly cruise your favorite trails for an afternoon. Santa Cruz's revered VPP suspension platform can be blamed for much of the Tallboy's overachieving performance, as well. Granting the Tallboy 100mm of rear-wheel travel, the wheel doesn't simply bounce up and down -- it's preci...

5010 Mountain Bike Frame - 2015 Satin Black/White, M

It's easy to spend weeks, if not months, sorting through the avalanche of mountain bike models that debut or are redesigned every year, sorting and sifting through catalogs and websites, just trying to find The One -- that one bike that fits your budget and can do it all, from your occasional XC race, to your days riding the lifts, to your multi-day backcountry adventures. There are some compelling entries out there, but allow us to assert that the 2015 Santa Cruz 5010 Mountain Bike Frame you see here is the cream of the do-it-all crop. It's unchanged from the 2014 model with the exception of some new colors, which means it's still the perfect platform on which to build your ultimate one-bike bike. What makes it so? Many things, but here are the highlights: First, 27. 5-inch wheels, the sweet spot between big-wheel 29ers and old-school 26ers. Second, 125mm of rear wheel travel, landing right between short-travel race rigs and big-hit trail-crushers. Third, perfectly neutral geometry that can climb, descend, and handle with the best of them. Fourth is the light, stiff aluminum chassis and all the wonderful things that you can do upon it, while saving a good chunk of money compared to the carbon fiber version, too. Speaking of which, we'll admit that the carbon version of the 5010 delivers the model's purest performance, but the alloy version here showcases the latest and greatest of Santa Cruz's expertise in the manipulation of aluminum, delivering a frame that's only slightly heavier than its fibrous friend. Butted and hydroformed tubes take optimized shapes that came to be as the result of countless test-riding hours and computer model simulation, resulting in, among other things, excellent standover height and a tapered head tube for steering precision. On the whole, handling and lateral stiffness are superb, and the chassis is still light enough to race but tough enough to take some drops. Were it not for the scales or the ring from the flick of your fingerna...
