Chinatown Blu-ray Disc

Many films from the 1970s allow even the most gripping narratives to flow with the consequences of real life. CHINATOWN is a classic film whose intrigues and adventures culminate in life-changing moments for its protagonist Jake Gittes Jack Nicholson. Director Roman Polanski's classic neo-noir detective story is set during a heat wave in 1930s Los Angeles where residents suffer from a water shortage due to an ongoing drought. With stellar contributions from composer Jerry Goldsmith and screenwriter Robert Towne whose script recalls the hard-boiled cynicism of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett CHINATOWN is a complex and superbly crafted period drama that has become Polanski's most critically acclaimed film. Private investigator Gittes runs a sleazy detective agency. When a client Diane Ladd hires him to spy on her "husband" who is rumored to be having an affair with a younger woman Jake uncovers a plot against the man--but this is only the tip of the iceberg. Still to emerge are a sex scandal implicating the real wife Faye Dunaway with whom Jake is destined to become more closely acquainted and a real estate swindle of tremendous proportions devised by her tycoon father John Huston backed up by a vast network of corrupt city officials and landowners who make life hell for the private eye. This story crystallizes the impact of a chance meeting with the romantic ideals of the early 1970s when the American urban landscape and economic power structures were in flux.

Devil Wears Prada Blu-ray Disc

A drastic improvement on Lauren Weisberger's bestselling novel THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA showcases Meryl Streep's knack for combining humor and sadness. While likely inspired by notorious VOGUE editor Anna Wintour Streep's Miranda Priestly head of Runway magazine is entirely her own creation. Sporting silvery hair a vast collection of fur coats an encyclopedic knowledge of all things fashionable and a killer smile Miranda is full of wicked charm. With her mature beauty and commanding presence Miranda is as fascinating to watch as she is intimidating to the constant rotation of assistants thrown her way. When bookish Northwestern grad Andy Sachs Anne Hathaway interviews to become Miranda's newest lackey Miranda hires her not for her lackluster wardrobe but for her intellect. Inside the pristine Runway offices Andy suffers through a never-ending list of impossible tasks and is the subject of constant harassment by Miranda's jealous first assistant Emily Blunt. But to the dismay of her boyfriend Adrian Grenier and close friends Andy slowly finds herself seduced by the glamorous world of fashion and by Miranda herself. While Andy's transformation comes largely in the form of new designer clothing the makeover is mental as well. What starts out as a firm belief in fashion's vapidity and in Miranda's heartlessness gradually fades into the suspicion that the boss from hell might just be hiding a soul. While the book villainized its title character the film gives new depths to her wrath. As Andy trades her undergrad wardrobe for one packed with Prada and Chanel with help from Stanley Tucci in a brilliant role viewers are able to savor the work of costume designer Patricia Field. Together with director David Frankel who also worked on SEX AND THE CITY Field creates a world of fashion so wonderfully extreme it would be hard for anyone to resist.

Porky's Blu-ray Disc

A raunchy irreverent comedy classic released in the early 80s to set the tone for all other teen flicks of that era PORKY'S takes a look at the sex lives of a group of teenage boys in 1950s Florida in all their obsessive unfulfilled glory. Pee Wee the main character in this group of six Angel Beach high schoolers is so named for the size of his appendage; nonetheless he wants nothing more than to lose his virginity. All six spend most of their time devising easy ways to score and spying on coeds in the shower taking breaks only to insult their large dictator-like teacher Ms. Ballbricker and play pranks on each other. They devise a plan to take a trip to a divey strip club in the Everglades called Porky's where they are sure to get some action; unfortunately owner Porky doesn't much care for the underage likes of them and after humiliating them and stealing their money he kicks them out. The boys are deflated but not for long! What follows is one of the most elaborate and uproarious revenge plots ever committed to film one that cemented this movie's place within the canon of comedy forever. Director Bob Clark culled his own childhood memories to write the film over a period of 15 years and the personal quality as well as the elements of racism that were characteristic of post-WWII Florida lend the film an authenticity that rises above the mere sex comedy. It also stars Kim Cattrall who went on to star as Samantha in SEX AND THE CITY.

Transporter 3 Includes Digital Copy Blu-ray Disc

Combining Western-style car chases and Hong Kong-inspired fight sequences choreographed by martial arts legend Cory Yuen the Luc Besson-created TRANSPORTER films have found international success as a sort of working-class James Bond series. Jason Statham who has become the go-to guy for big-budget B-movie thrills returns once again as Frank Martin the driver-for-hire for whom no job is too risky. Brimming with the usual jaw-dropping stunts this is another crowd-pleasing entry in the saga delivered at a brisk and flashy clip by director Olivier Megaton. Following the coercion of Ukrainian environmental official Leonid Vasilev Jeroen Krabbe into signing papers permitting the shipping of toxic materials into a harbor by criminal mastermind Johnson Robert Knepper Frank Martin is forced into accepting the job of driving Vasilev's kidnapped daughter Valentina Natalya Rudakova--acting as human collateral--from Marseilles to the Black Sea coastal city of Odessa. On the chance the Martin should attempt to flee Johnson has rigged him with a bracelet that will detonate if he strays more than 75 feet from his car. When Valentina is intercepted by a rival group Martin will have to push his Audi M8 to the limit to complete his mission and ensure his own survival. The TRANSPORTER films require copious amounts of suspension of disbelief but then again one doesn't hope they will strictly adhere to the laws of physics. The third volume provides ample thrills not the least of which is the sight of a car driving off a bridge onto a moving train. Plenty of screen time is also given to Statham's superhumanly chiseled torso while freckled Rudakova's unconventional beauty balances out the sex appeal. In the end Statham's undeniable likeability propels the film and his chemistry in a handful of scenes with Franois Berleand returning as Inspector Tarconi provides some nice comic moments.

Flirt Blu-ray Disc

Hal Hartley's cinematic experiment FLIRT presents a film shot in three parts at three different locations: New York Berlin and Tokyo. Each story contains the same basic elements--a love triangle a phone call a crisis and a shooting--but the specifics change with each city and situation. In New York a noncommittal man William Sage contemplates a future with the woman Parker Posey he's currently involved with; in Berlin a gay man Dwight Ewell wavers between two lovers; and in Tokyo a female flirt Miho Nikaido ponders life with her American boyfriend Hartley himself. By taking one plot and essentially the same script and transposing it to three sets of characters and locales Hartley creates an intriguing and at times self-mocking trilogy that questions the nature of commitment.
