Microwave safety tips
Microwaves have developed into one of the most popular kitchen appliances in the modern home. The come in a huge variety of shapes, designs and colors, from stainless steel microwaves to slim microwaves. However due to the way they cook food, by passing microwave radiation through the food’s molecules to produce heat, microwave ovens can be dangerous if they are not operated or looked after correctly. Here are some tips on microwave safety:
- Never operate the microwave if it is empty because the waves will damage the interior.
- Never put metal in the microwave oven. This includes aluminum foil or utensils with a metal trim.
- Pierce foods with a skin, such as potatoes, tomatoes etc, to allow steam to escape and prevent them from overheating and exploding.
- Similarly, if the dish is covered in plastic wrap or a seal, pierce the plastic several times and always open the side farthest away from you to prevent splashing the hot contents on your hands.
- Never use microwaves that appear faulty or damaged.
- Eggs with the shell on will explode and should not be cooked in the microwave.
- Use oven gloves or potholders to remove contents from the microwave as they can be very hot.
