Nobody just goes to the movies anymore. Of course, movie theatres still fill up, and people still watch, but they’re not just going to the movies. They are going to IMAX movies, or IMAX 3D even. What was once a simple synthesis of visual and auditory pleasure has become an all encompassing spectacle. In some theatres, for a few extra bucks, you can even sit in a seat that rumbles and shakes with the action in the movie. The movies have become more. You’re local movie theatre is now a carnival for the senses. And I don’t know when it happened. At one point, one overpriced movie ticket and one overpriced tub of popcorn was all you needed. You knew you were in for a couple of hours of looking and listening. With movies today, you are all but a part of the movie itself. I recently had a friend describe a certain high budget James Cameron flick, which he’d seen in IMAX 3D, as a “religious experience.” I thought, “Man, have movies come a long way.”

And I’m sure there’s something for everyone in this new realm of cinema. For some, the 3D effects might bring them that step closer to interacting with their favorite characters, allowing them to feel as if their living a second life, if just for that brief couple hours. For others, the advances in sound, delivering that huge dynamic feel, going beyond simple listening, might be what keeps them shelling out the fifteen bucks for a trip to the movies. But for me, the modern movie experience is all about the crisp, high definition picture on the screen. And it doesn’t need to be 3D to impress. I’m just amazed by how movies look these days; the vivid colors, detailed textures, and smooth movement takes the purely visual part of the experience to a whole new level.

Needless to say, I became enamored with the idea of reproducing that kind of visual experience in my own living room. Not that long ago, I fixed the problem. I went out and bought a new flat panel, 1080p HDTV, and complemented the purchase with a Blu Ray equipped Sony PS3. And while the screen size might not compare to the big screen, when I pop in my favorite Blu Ray movies, the picture on the TV in my living room is near cinema-quality. For those who want a Blu Ray quality picture without all of the extras bundled up in a PS3, a Panasonic or LG Blu Ray player will work fine for your needs. Whatever you decide, decide to upgrade to Blu Ray. Say hello to the eye candy. Instead of squinting to see what kind of fish is on the screen, you’ll be squinting to count the scales. No joke. And if you’re worried by people saying that Blu Ray is just a passing fad, I would tell you the same thing was said about DVD. So, unless your idea of movie night starts with turning off the audio cassette, powering up the VHS, and unplugging your home telephone, you’ll probably be looking to upgrade.
