Tips for picking out a TV stand

Depending on your preferences and your living room or bedroom setup, picking out a TV stand could be easy for the easygoing… and really difficult for fussy people like me. If you’re one of the latter or you’re picking out a TV stand with someone who is (for example, my really picky boyfriend), here are some things to consider during your search.
- Most TV stands are about 20”-24” high. Searching online for tall TV stands can be really tough, so try to specify for a “bedroom height” TV stand if you want a taller one. You can also consider installing casters for added height, or just mount your TV on the wall. Be sure to invest in a stud-finder for that, of course.
- How big is your space? If it’s a little cramped where your TV stand will be, consider opting out of TV stands with doors that open out, and just look for stands with open shelves or sliding doors.
- If you have a lot of DVDs, try looking for a TV credenza or a TV wall cabinet so you can have space to put away all of your movies and shows. Likewise, you could have a separate bookcase or media cabinet for all of your extras.
- Take those size recommendations seriously, especially if you’re dealing with particle board. A TV is a valuable thing and if you want to place a 60” TV on top of a TV stand meant for a 42”, you’re risking your TV and the life of your TV stand. Grooves are meant for couches, not your stand!
- Remember that your TV and the stand are part of the room and not separate from it, so take your décor into consideration! Before you get overwhelmed, here are some common choices to choose from: wood, glass, corner TV stands. Many new styles have “country French” styling if you’ve got a shabby chic décor going on, so take advantage!
Hopefully these considerations will help you out. It’s just not fun picking out the one you want only to find out that your roommate or boyfriend had opinions and assumptions of their own that they didn’t voice to you. Good luck!
